Once a month we host a two-hour painting class/pizza party for persons with developmental disabilities and friends from the general community. These events are an opportunity for day program participants and other special needs friends to paint and socialize with “paint buddies” from the broader community. The parties are very popular and eagerly anticipated by all participants. We have learned that individuals with developmental disabilities are often very isolated, spending their days primarily with others from their own community, having few opportunities to socialize with the general public. Our Pizza-Paint parties provide this opportunity. Everyone who attends our Pizza Paint Parties learns and benefits from the experience: the special needs artists as well as our paint buddies. The one-on-one personal connection of creating art together creates a bond between participants, increasing their understanding of each other and their worlds.
Pizza Paint Parties are held once a month on a Wednesday at noon. Dates for upcoming parties are: August 13, August 30, and September 13.
Each event can accommodate approximately 20 special needs guests and 20 paint buddies. Call the studio at 612-354-3961 to learn how to get your special needs group involved or how to become a paint buddy volunteer!
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund and through a grant from the United Church of Christ – Neighbors in Need Program.
